The ruins are open to the public year round but choose a clear day to get the full effect of the skyline views. The ruins are incredible during a sunset in the summer or after a snow fall in the winter.
The Wegelnburg ruin castle near Nothweiler is in the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, near the border with France. Its location is at a height of 572m, making it the highest ruined castle in the Palatinate Forest.
We parked in the town center near a museum and followed a blue trail marker with a ghost through the town toward the wooded tree line. The trail path is wide and well maintained with an uphill incline for about 2km.
We went in February on a rainy day which limited our view once we reached the top but provided a isolated setting. Despite the incline, this is a short trail that is both kid and dog friendly. We traveled one way up to the ruins and back down, however these ruins are part of a 10k loop trail that features many castle ruins along the route. We visited during the week, and didn't come across any other hikers. There is limited information on this location and I imagine minimal travelers year round along this trail.
This is a beautiful secluded location and well worth the trip to see the 360* views.
