CLIMATE/WEATHER: Every season is different and a great setting for photos. In summer the average daytime temperature reaches its maximum in July/August: 20°C (68°F). In winter it can get quite cold, the temperature drops below zero -3°C (26°F) in Jan/Feb, even colder during the night.
In the summer months of July and August there is sometimes a market with BBQ and Karaoke.
The half arch dome is 427 meters long. Originally, the structure was built to protect the railway and passengers and also the ferry boat to Sakhalin island (in those days, it was called Karafuto). The construction works had begun in 1931 and finished in 1936. The structure had worked as the northest railway station on Hokkaido island till 1945. In 1978, the structure had rebuilt. Today, it is a symbol and an important part of park which shows us the history of Wakkanai. It is a heritage of Hokkaido and a breakwater like this one doesn't exist anywhere else in the world.
