Vinales - Tobacco Plantation
More exciting from November to February: You can watch the planting, the plants themselves or the actual harvesting process.
Weather and Crowds:
Best during the dry season roughly from November to April but it's also the peak season. Shoulder season May and June is worth a try and less crowded. Showers may occur but easier to find a nice casa without booking in advance. Avoid the cyclon season from July to October and the school holiday from July to August.
Vinales is a must to see where real Cuban cigars come from. We did a guided trip by horse which was a great experience. To be honest the cigars we bought from the organic farm were even better than the Cohiba. We also got a mojito offered by the farmer, the best I've ever tried. The tour included a tobacco plantation, a cave visit and a coffee farm where meals were offered.
The tobacco plants are planted in October/November and need less than two months to get harvested. The color turns from green to yellow and then to golden brown. It looks like that the climate change becomes a challenge in future time for the farmers. Heavy rainfalls during the harvesting season forces the farmers to replant.
