Suilven

When Is the Best Time

Year round, there is no specific time. You just have to see what she (Suilven) looks like in the morning when you get up: Great and climbable? :) She always seems to have a cloud hat on, even in the summer.

Review and Tips

Suilven is only 731 metres high, but its one of the finest mountains in Scotland. Its stunning views make it even more fascinating. There is also plenty of wildlife to see, when i was up last year at the end of July and the start of August we saw different species of Dragon flies, colorful hairy Caterpillars, a slow worm and plenty of Beetles ;)

Regarding the visiting time: I was talking to a man one day I met on a hill while out climbing and he said he had been to Assynt twice to stay so that he could climb Suilven and it never happened because of the weather in the summer. :)

Looks awesome. How long does the hike take? Is the trail well marked. Beautiful view!

Hey Micha, the hike takes usually about 6 to 8 hour and depends on how you are fit. The walk begins in the car park in front of the Glencanisp lodge. In the first part of the walk you just have to stick to the stalkers' path. After few miles, there is a bridge over the river and after a while you encounter small cairn on the right side of the road. In this place you have turn right to the boggy ground and walk to the bottom of the mountain. There you will see a zig zag path up the hill. When you reach the col, turn right and walk the path to the very top. This is only one of many possible ways to reach the top. Cheers.

The other way you can also go is through Inverkircaig, you can follow the River Kirkaig part of the way and if you have time to do a small detour you can go see the Falls of Kircaig,it's not a hard walk up to the falls and they are certainly worth the effort to look at!

The way up from Inverkirkaig is usually quite boggy but slightly shorter ...

I'm just home from a wild-camp on the summit of Suiven.
It has been on my bucket list to camp there for several years, and although I've climbed it and stayed in the Bothy nearby many times, the weather was never right for a high camp...until now!

@Mountainstar: Gorgeous pictures! Looks like it's easy to find a good camping space there?

Oct 21, 2015

Yes, there are many possibilities to camp up high there.
