When Is the Best Time

Praia da Marinha is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and worldwide. You easily spend an entire day here without getting bored. The view from the top is already stunning. Stairs lead down to one of the most visited beaches at the Algarve.

The photo above was taken at low tide and this at high tide.

Marinha Beach is best visited during low tide. With the incoming tide, the beach narrows and during high tide, depending on the surf even difficult to leave if you are at the end of this stunning beach. Tide Times Praia da Marinha

A part of this rock arch gets bathed by the ocean at high tide.

The sea temperature is most pleasant from May to October. In May ranging from 16-20°C, and after the hot summer from 24-18°C.

Avoiding Crowds

View from the sea to Praia da Marinha and to rock arches
The crowds thin out in September, my favourite month.

The Portuguese school holidays start in late June and last until the beginning of September; therefore, July and August are crazy at the Algarve. June and September are excellent months, with fantastic weather and fewer people. In summer, most accommodations are fully booked, and the sky is the limit for the better-rated ones. A huge parking area at Praia da Marinha fills up quickly during the peak season.

The winter is mild, roughly 16°C during the day and dropping to 9°C at night. Spring and autumn are warm, ranging from 18-24°C in the shade. In the summer, temperatures often climb to 30°C, but nights cool down due to the sea breeze. Winter is the wettest time of the year though it doesn't rain for days often. The driest months are May to September. The Algarve is an outstanding destination throughout the year through July and August; beaches are packed with Portugues and tourists from all over the world.

What Does Algarve Mean?

View from the cliffs to Praia Marinha and two rock arches.
The porous rock is washed out by the sea, and rock arches are formed.

The name Algarve comes from the Arabic "El Garb" and means the west of the country in the beyond. From the cardinal points of the compass, the Algarve in Portugal is located in the south but in the southwest of Europe.

Praia da Marinha is the most beautiful and famous beach on the Algarve, with lots of rock formations up to 30 meters high. The rocks protect the beach from cold winds. Even in winter, you may sunbathe at Praia da Marinha, but don't forget sunscreen even in winter, the sun is strong; UV6.

These rocks protect Praia da Marinha, some of them are from the collapse in 1998

However, don't stay too close to the cliffs during your visit. In 1998 a part of the cliff was broken and fell down, the reason why it has been harder to get to the end of the beach since then.

Activities at Marinha Beach

Walking along Praia da Marinha
The water is pleasant in September and great for snorkelling.
  • The crystal clear water is awesome for snorkelling and easy to access.
  • Swimming in this lovely and refreshing sea is what the Portuguese love.
  • The coastal walk on top of the cliffs leads to Benagil, a walking duration of roughly half an hour with spectacular views.

Accommodation Tip Albufeira

A rental house with a huge garden close to Albufeira

There are plenty of hotels, guest houses, and rental homes at the Algarve. We chose a rental house close to Albufeira. I recommend accommodations between Portimao and Albufeira. I suppose you like to explore some of the most outstanding places and you don't like to drive that far. I prefer to stay closer to all activities and the most beautiful beaches. I added a link for rental houses around Albufeira via booking.com.
