Old Yard Cemetery

When Is the Best Time

Fall, the fall foliage cannot be beat, the depth of shades in the sky, and there are organized cemetery tours available in late October.

Historic Site
United States, Stowe, Vermont
Review and Tips

New England is a region that is comprised of six states and is the treasured home of countless historical sites from America's earliest days pre-dating the Revolutionary War, onward through the founding of our country.

Old Yard Cemetery is one of seven cemeteries in Stowe, VT. Stowe is best known for being a travel destination for winter-loving skiers. But if you end up in Stowe, taking a slow walk through the Old Yard will give you a glimpse into New England's history made by brave and hearty people that survived intense winters and had their own militia called the Green Mountain Boys. They fought for the people who would become Vermonters before they were even a colony.

Buried at Old Yard are 33 veterans of the American Revolutionary War, 17 veterans of the War of 1812, and 11 Civil War veterans along with many other notable early settlers.

This reminds me to a cemetery we discovered one morning during our honeymoon traveling through the New England states. We arrived late night at a motel on our way to Kancamagus highway. Next morning as we walked outside we recognized that our sleeping room was directly in front of a similar nice located cemetery. Unfortunately I cannot post a picture because of 2 reasons. We didn’t took one and at this time digital image taking was not mainstream. But your post Melissa brought back my memories immediately!

Melissa your Indian Summer pictures are beautiful. Something which is still on my bucket list. Is it worth to stay in Stowe? Do the two State Forests close to Stowe have the typical autumn foliage?

Markus, how delightful this place I added brought back memories of your honeymoon. I am curious how you picked New England as your destination. Someday, I hope you return.

Rene, thank you for the compliment - though nature gets all the credit. I hardly had to do anything to take a stunning shot. The colors were at their peak. Staying in Stowe is worth it but you won't find a town that isn't worth it during the heart of the fall season in Vermont. Stowe is a tourist destination, so there are an abundance of restaurants and shops (at least in comparison to the rest of the state of Vermont). If you look at staying in Stowe, I would recommend two locations; The Green Mountain Inn, some of the warmest folks in the hospitality industry work there, and Trapp Family Lodge, which I have posted about on this site if you feel like pulling up the listing to check them out. The entire state is magnificent, I promise if you visit, the beauty will surround you. Seventy-five percent of the state is forest. Please feel free to send me a message, I would be happy to keep in touch with you if you'd like any other travel tips.
