When Is the Best Time

January to April are the best months for a visit to the Irazu volcanic crater regarding the weather. However, there isn't any guarantee to get a glimpse of this impressive volcano. You increase your chance for spectacular views in the early morning before the clouds roll in and spoil the fantastic view.

This volcano crater is easily accessible by car and tour busses therefore busy during the day.

Irazu located in the Central Volcanic Mountain Range an hour drive north of Cartago. "Irazu" in the indigenous language means "thunder and earthquake mountain".. Rightly it's still an active volcano; last heavy eruption was in 1994.

The volcano is easily accessible by car and busses. The clouds roll in latest at midday and you end up in fog. The reason for the unusual vegetation like a specific kind of oak trees in 3.400 m elevation.
