There are many activities around Krabi; this is a must do trail to experience the breathtaking landscape self-guided. Hang Nak mountain is 498 meters / 1634 feet high above sea level.

The Tab Kak Hang Nak hiking trail becomes more popular, but due to the remote location, it's still not overrun up to hundred hikers per day. Start hiking in the morning to avoid the heat at midday. At this time of the day, only a few people are along the trail and on the top. The trail is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you would like to watch the sunrise or sunset you have to contact one of the ranger/officers otherwise you may get a fine of 1000 Baht.

Weather

The dry season lasts from December to late April. However, showers can also occur in the dry season and especially in the rainforest. The hottest months are March and April with temps around 34°C and higher. Due to the high humidity hiking and breathing are more strenuous. The rainy season starts around late April and persists until the end of November.

This sacred Buddhist Temple is located northeast of Krabi and Aonang. It is less than 10 km from Krabi town and 20 km from Aonang. To get there from Aonang took us 40 minutes by scooter.

It's very popular hiking to the top of the Tiger Cave Temple. Therefore, start either early morning with a pleasant temp before the buses arrive or in the late afternoon when it starts to cool down, and the stairs are in the shade. The entrance to the stairway is always open, and there isn't any fee requested. Sunrise and sunset are marvelous, but you need a flashlight for the way up or down.

You get the best shot with the Buddha Statues on the top with sunlight in the morning. The downside the sun is heating up the stairs which makes it even harder to climb 1.237 steps up and down. After rainfall, the stairs are a bit slippery.

Avoiding Crowds

The Tiger Cave Temple is part of many day trips combined with the Emerald Pools. When the buses arrive, it gets crowded and can spoil this awesome experience. Therefore, rent a scooter or take a tuk-tuk to get there independent either early morning or late afternoon. It's also the best time to handle the heat.

Weather, Seasons, and Crowds
  • Dry Season from December to April
It's always pretty hot day temps are above 30°C throughout the year but drier the reason that the humidity is more bearable. Showers occur mostly in the afternoon or night. Between January and March, you get frequently a clear blue sky. However, it's the peak season, very busy, and hotel prices are the highest.

  • Rainy Season from May to November
Wet season with higher humidity. The temps are still around 30°C but muggy. Most precipitation occurs in September. During the rainy season, everything can happen: Typical are days with 1-2 brief showers. You might even get two weeks of perfect dry weather or sometimes almost a week of straight rain. If you don't like crowds at all and can deal with unpredictable weather and rain, this is your season. Preferably not September, which is the wettest month. In the rainy season, no tourist crowds spoil the experience. It’s also the green season when rich fauna comes to life.

It's a majestic scenery surrounded by limestone cliffs. The emerald green color of the water is like nowhere else on earth.

Sweet spot months without the heavy crowds and a high chance of good weather during the wet season are May and October. Both months usually bring warm and sunny conditions with brief rain showers only; often in the afternoon or late evening. There is less humidity in October than during the previous months. However, keep in mind that it's already/still rainy season and the weather can become unpredictable.

December - April (Dry Season)

If you want almost perfect weather visit between January and March: calm seas, clear blue sky, moderate temperatures Anyhow, rain shower can occur. However, it's high season and very busy (read below: Tourist Crowds)

Tourist Crowds

High season is from November/December until April. Expect massive crowds here and almost every else in Krabi. Accommodation rates start climbing in November. The only chance to avoid the crowds is either come early morning or even better spend two nights here.

Where to Stay at Railay

There are a number of accommodations around Railay. It's more convenient if you stay at Railay West or private transport is included. Our #1 choice is the Railay Village Resort perfectly situated in the heart of Railay offers privacy despite the busy location. Another excellent choice is the Rayavadee remote located offers a first class service. Shuttle from the airport to the 5* hotel is organized by the resort.

Tips for Boat Trips (during high season)

Longboats are operating from 8 am to 6 pm. daily. Go at a different time than most others. Either very early by taking the very first boat or book sunset trips. The beach starts to fill up quickly after 10 am, and midday is the worst; it's difficult to enjoy the beautiful scenery with so many other people. Another alternative is to go out on a diving or fishing boat. It's more expensive, but they are more comfortable and usually welcome non-divers as well as non-fishing passengers. They also take less traveled routes and visit less busy locations which are excellent for snorkeling. We'd booked a sunset tour with included dinner on the vessel of our resort the Aonang Fiore. We highly recommend a cruise along the coast, Railay Beach, to Poda Island, and Chicken Island.
