When should you hike a trail? Some hikes lead to fascinating forests, some have tremendous views and others are rich in variety. Share your favorite trails with other hikers and nature lovers.
- Spring is pleasant (flower season August and especially September), but rain is possible until the end of August. October is not too hot and a good month for hiking and rock climbing.
- Summer from November to March is warm and dry but hot at midday with almost any shelter. Hiking in summer is best in the morning.
- Autumn from April to mid-May is still warm and pleasant for hiking, but rain showers can occur.
- Most precipitation in winter until August. Nights are really cold. Snow on the peaks is possible. Low water bridge across Olifants river can be flooded and closed.
Crowded at weekends, public holiday and school holiday. More popular for the South Africans. Stadsaal Cave best sunlight in the afternoon.
Best at low tide especially for the 9.2 km long hike around the peninsula. Tide times
Whale spotting from May to November possible.
Candelabra flowers in bloom from February to April.
In general, low rainfall in the Plettenberg area. Driest and coldest months are from June to October. The coolest and driest month is July. More precipitation in the hottest months from November until March. Most rainfall in March. However, Plettenberg gets more than 300 hours of sunshine each month in summer.

Best in summer, also spring and autumn are good seasons for this adventurous hike. Please note the days before should've been dry otherwise it is even more slippery and you often stuck in the mud.
The Canyon is a year-round destination and every season is different. Be prepared weather can change dramatically at anytime particularly in winter.
Winter (Nov. until Jan./Feb.):
Expect cold and snow on the upper elevation. Carry extra layers for the nights, they are quite cold. Weather can be great during the day. The temps on the bottom of the canyon are mild. Mostly dry from February on. Sometimes winter can last until the beginning of April. Winter is a good time for hiking. Less visitors at this time of the year.
March and April: These months are often windy
Spring (April and May):
Expect a little rain only. It’s the driest time of the year and warms up to 75°F (24°C) . The landscape is brown and it’s dusty. Waterfalls are on a low level. Easter time gets crowded.
Summer (June to August):
Extreme heat on the bottom of the canyon but hiking on high elevation pleasant. End of June rain starts. Vegetation turns green and flowers are in bloom. The flow of the waterfalls is impressive. It’s not always rainy, there are also perfect summer days. Camping on the bottom is a high risk due to flash floods.
Autumn (Sep. until mid.-Nov.):
Rain can last until mid-Sep. Temps are moderate and hiking conditions are good. It’s still hot on the bottom of the canyon.
June to September is the best time for river rafting on Rio Urique. Rio Grande is less wild, the ride is more gentle with beautiful panoramic views.
August to December and March April
